Somatin:

Inhibits secretion of growth hormone
Inhibits the secretion of both insulin and glucagon
Suppresses pancreatic exocrine secretions by inhibiting cholecystokinin stimulated enzyme secretion
Inhibits secretion of many of GI hormones including gastrin, cholecystokinin and vasoactive intestinal peptide
Suppresses reaction of gastric acid and pepsin, lower the rate of gastric acid pepsin, lower the rate of gastric employing and reduces smooth muscle contractions and blood flow with in the intestine.
Reduces portal blood flow and hepatic venous pressure.
Possess anti proliferative action on some cell lines
Reduces splanchnic blood flow in healthy subjects
In cirrhosis, via. splanchnic vasoconstriction reduces portal vein flow and minimizes the blood flow of the bleeding oesophageal varix.
Decreases portal pressure without adverse effects on systemic circulation as observed with Vasopressin.
Used as emergency therapy to achieve rapid haemostasis until definitive therapy can be performed.
Control of bleeding prior to endoscopy may improve the visibility for the endoscopist, thereby making the procedure technically less difficult and reducing the risk of major complications.
Useful in preventing early rebleeding.
A potent inhibitor of acid secretion and also decreases measentric blood flow. Can be used in treating G. I. hemorrhage.
A potent inhibitor of pancreatic secretion, useful in treating acute pancreatitis.
In acromegaly, reduces the secretion of growth hormone.

Indications:

Acute, severe gastrointestinal haemorrhage, resulting from gastric or duodenal ulcers, haemorrhagic gastritis and oesophageal varices.
Treatment of intestinal, billary and pancreatic fistulae.
Symptomatic treatment of excessive secretion from endocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.
Treatment of postoperative domplications and prophylaxis following pancreatic surgery.
Coadjuvant treatment in diabetic ketoacidosis.

Dosage:

Initial Dose	250 mcg as bolus over 3 to 5min.
Maintenance dose	Followed by a continual i.v. infusion of 3.5 µg/kg per hour, i.e. one 3 mg vial given over 12 hours. The continual administration should last a minimum of 48 hours and a maximum of 120 hours (five days)
Coadjuvant treatment	In patients with ketoacidosis, infusion of 100-500 µg/h of
In diabetic ketoacidosis	somatostatin given concurrently with a bolus insulin injection
